Lindon, Utah-based security software publisher Avinti announced Tuesday that its anti-spamming plug-in, NEWT, is now available as a free public beta program. Avinti explained that NEWT, which is short for Neutralize E-mail—Web Threats, is a plug-in that embeds itself into common e-mail gateways and then blocks unwanted incoming e-mails that contain URLs or IP addresses linking to known malware Web sites. Avinti is restricting the number of public beta participants for the software, though it plans to offer the utility to the general public as an open and free service. Avinti is a privately held company backed by Sequel Venture Partners, Symantec and vSpring Capital.
