Concept To Company Competitions Expand To Southern Utah Grow Utah Ventures, Zions Bank, and USTAR said Friday that they are expanding their "Concept to Company" contest to Southern Utah. The new Southern Utah competition, which was created by Grow Utah Ventures to encourage entrepreneurism, is similar to a competition the group had in Ogden last month. The contest awards $20,000 in cash plus consulting or prototype services to the winner, plus $10,000 each to two runner ups. According to Photobucket, it has added the ability for users to customize backgrounds, colors, and borders around photos and videos posted at the site. The new feature--called "Album themes" includes over 500 different pre-configured themes, plus the ability to customize and create your own. Photobucket is owned by Fox Interactive Media. posted on Friday, October 10, 2008(Full story) Avnet Looks To Buy UK Distributor Phoenix-based Avnet said Friday that it plans to acquire Abacus Group PLC, a distributor of electronic components in Europe, for approximately $73M. According to Avnet, it has offered £0.55 per share for Abacus Group, which had $497M in sales for its fiscal year ended September 2007. Abacus distributes electronic components in 10 countries across Europe. Avnet said that the board of directors of Abacus is recommending acceptance of the offer by its shareholders. posted on Friday, October 10, 2008(Full story) ON Semiconductor Completes Catalyst Semiconductor Buy Phoenix, Arizona-based ON Semiconductor said Friday that it has completed its acquisition of Catalyst Semiconductor. The deal was worth around $115M, and was announced in July. Catalyst Semiconductor produces analog, mixed-signal and non-volatile memory chips. According to the firm, the U.S. office was opened to best serve its growing US consumer base. The office will be based in Greenwood Village, and will provide technical support and software development for the telephony market.
