Two Salt Lake Groups Awarded Millions In DOE Investments
Two Salt Lake City groups are the recipients of investments from the U.S. Department of Energy, as part of an effort to help advance innovative manufacturing technologies in the United States. The DOE said Tuesday that it will award $54 million to thirteen projects nationwide focused on helping manufacturers reduce their energy usage, including $7.1M to the American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) and $1.46M to the University of Utah. The DOE said the awards are meant to help support American leadership and global competitiveness in manufacturing. The AISI project is looking to use natural gas, hydrogen, or syngas to reduce the energy-and-capital intensive operations required for iron manufacturing; the University of Utah project is aimed at producing titanium components to reduce materials needed in aircraft and vehicle manufacturing.
