Venture Totals Drop In Region During Q4, To $229.4M

Venture capital investments dropped in the region in Q4 of 2013, according to the numbers from the PricewaterhouseCoopers/National Venture Capital Association MoneyTree report. According to the report, there was a total of $229.4M invested across the region in Q4, which was down both from the $367.8M invested in Q4 of 2012, and the $279.5M invested in Q3. The amount was down due to lower investment numbers in Colorado. The numbers are based on data from Thomson Reuters.

For the region, Utah led investments, up quarter-to-quarter to $112.0M invested in the state; that was followed by Colorado with $89.5M invested, then New Mexico, with $25.1M invested. Arizona had $2.7M in investments. Utah was up above Q3 investments, when it raised $79.3M, and Colorado was down significantly from its Q3 numbers, when $136.6M was invested in the state.

Venture Capital investment totals are notoriously volatile across the region, as different sectors and states see surges or withdrawals in funding. Quarter to quarter investment totals on a state by state basis tend to swing by the hundreds of millions, depending on the stage of investment in a company and number of startups in a sector. For example, Utah--with over $100M in investments this quarter--had only $37.65M invested in Q2.
