Photobucket Used In Massive Router Malware Attack

The services of Denver-based photo sharing and storage site Photobucket appear to be--unknowningly--at the center of a massive malware attack on Internet home and small office routers, reported on Wednesday by security research firm Talos. According to Talos, the "VPNFilter" attack appears to be aimed at devices in the Ukraine, but has since spread to as many as 500,000 small and home office routers around the world. Talos said the new malware is "likey state-sponsored", and appears to affect Linksys, MikroTik, NETGEAR and TP-Link networking equipment in the small and home office (SOHO) space, as well at QNAP network-attached storage (NAS) devices. Photobucket's services--unknowingly--appear to be used an intermediary place for the malware to ccommunicate with its "command and control" network, using uploads and downloads of photos and EXIF metadata for communications.
