Occipital Buys Replica Labs

Boulder- and San Francisco-based Occipital, which develops 3D scanning tools, has acquired Replica Labs, a fellow developer of 3D scanning software. Financial terms of the acquisition were not disclosed. Replica develops software used for 3D construction of scenes, from a single camera. Occipital said the acquisition may lead to future release of its SDK, which could allow for reconstruction of scenes and objects in 3D, without the need for specialized, depth sensing hardware--even including consumer smartphones. Both Occipital and Replica Labs' tools are used in creating virtual reality (VR) and augmented reality (AR) content. Occipital said Replica Labs' staff has joined the company's Boulder office.
