QR Code City Heads To Rice Business Plan Competition
A Provo, Utah-based startup, QR Code City, created by Brigham Young University students is headed to the big Rice Business Plan Competition run by Rice University. According to the list of competitors released by Rice University this week, the startup is the only local team heading to the prestigious competition, which has over $1M in prizes, including a new $100,000 prize from venture firm Kleiner Perkins Caufield and Byers. Rice detailed the forty three teams heading to the April event this week. QR Code City has developed a QR code scanning application for the Apple iPhone. That application allows users to scan QR codes--2D barcodes--linking those phones to web sites, information, and more. QR codes have recently become popular in the U.S., but have been in use in Japan since the 1990's. QR Code City's founders are Ben Turley, Kirk Ouimet, and Garrett Gee, all out of BYU.
