Interview with Scott Johnson, CEO of AtTask

In our continuing interviews of companies and people around the region, we decided to talk with @Task (www.attask.com), an Orem, Utah-based firm in the software-as-a-service space. AtTask offers a project management service available from any web browser. We interviewed Scott Johnson, CEO of AtTask, and asked him to tell us a little bit about the firm.

Techrockies: Thanks for the interview. Tell us a little bit about AtTask, and what your company offers to customers?

Scott Johnson: We offer companies a project management solution that will allow them to blow the doors off of their competition. AtTask provides a centralized place for tracking everything from schedules and assignments, to documents, notes, and issues. Powerful reporting tools and search tools deliver all the information managers need to make critical business decisions quickly and effectively. Easy-to-use worksheets, intuitive Gantt chart views, and helpful portfolio overviews make it easy to centrally manage complex schedules with visibility across a global organization. AtTask is the only project and portfolio management solution that is browser-independent, platform independent and database independent. Customers don’t have to invest in hardware or work on platforms they don’t want. Clustered servers and redundant data enable AtTask to scale to thousands of users and still maintain data integrity.

Techrockies: Who typically uses your services?

Scott Johnson: The whole team, (managers, team members and executives). Most projects are actually run by managers who have not had formal project management training and really don’t want to spend too much time getting into the theory of how to run projects. They just want to get their work done. They need status updates from everyone on their team, and they need project visibility to upper management. This is where AtTask really shines. Executives, managers and team members across departments like AtTask because it’s easy to use and feature-rich. Most PPM software is complicated and slow. AtTask is not. People enjoy using AtTask because it doesn’t bog them down with complexity. Although AtTask provides powerful tools comprised of thousands of features that manage huge amounts of data, it’s easy and fun to use. We have companies of all sizes and industries that are using AtTask. Because we are platform independent, we have a lot of companies in the media and entertainment industry that are using AtTask so that they can bring their Mac users into the fold. We have small companies with just a few users in a small office to organizations with thousands of users that span the globe.

Techrockies: Why would someone use AtTask, instead of using one of the more traditional tools like Microsoft Project?

Scott Johnson: Without exception, we deliver the best return on investment for our customers. AtTask is an enterprise project and portfolio management solution that comes standard with all the features required to meet the needs of the whole team and not just the project managers. MS Project is designed to give all the bells and whistles needed to keep project managers happy, but ignores the rest of the group.

Without requiring any additional modules or applications AtTask provides a centralized place to track everything from schedules and assignments, to documents, notes and issues. Powerful reporting tools and search tools deliver all the information needed to make critical business decisions quickly and effectively.

Techrockies: How long has AtTask been around, and what's the story behind the company?

Scott Johnson: AtTask, Inc. was founded in 2001. We started as a small partnership and have more than tripled in size in the last two years. AtTask is privately held and been profitable since its inception; all without any outside investment capital.

Techrockies: Thanks!
