BYU Invents Helmet Foam To Detect Concussions

Researchers at Brigham Young University have come up with a new, "smart" foam for football helmets, which replaces the regular foam padding in football helmets, and provides immediate feedback if a player has sustained a concussion, the school said this week. According to research published in the Annals of Biomedical Engineering, BYU mechanical engineering Ph.D. student, Jake Merrell, and a team of researchers across three BYU departments have created a "nano composite smartfoam" which can be placed inside a football helmet to test the impact and power of hits to a player. The foam immediately measures the force of the impact and sends that wirelessly to a coach or trainer on the sidelines, according to the school. BYU said that a company that produces vest for taekwondo vests has already started using the smartfoam, and hopes other companies might incorporate it into their products.
