Syntax-Brillian to Suspend LCoS Production

High-definition television manufacturer Syntax-Brillian Corp. revealed Wednesday that it plans to shut down or sell its LCoS, or liquid-crystal-on-silicon, production operations in Tempe, Ariz., by the end of the year. James Li, Syntax-Brillian's president and chief executive officer, explained that the pending suspension is consistent with the 120-day action plan the company announced on Oct. 9. The plan, Li said, stresses cutting costs and improving profits. Li noted that the elimination of Syntax-Brillian's LCoS operations will result in a one-time, non-cash charge of up to $40 million but a reduction in operating expenses of some $16 million per year. He added that the company will focus its efforts on manufacturing and marketing its LCD, or liquid-crystal-display, high-definition televisions.
