Simple Energy: Only 5 Percent of Colorado Residents Have Smart Thermostats

Boulder-based Simple Energy, which develops software to help motivate consumers to save energy, says that only five percent of Colorado residents are using smart thermostats. SimpleEnergy--which helps run a program with Xcel to increase the adoption of smart thermostats in Colorado--said that 41 percent of Colorado families have no idea what a smart thermostat means, much less own one. Smart thermostats use such information as your usage patterns, raise or lower the temperature in your home based on if anyone is in the home, and help people lower their energy bills and save money by suggesting changes. Xcel Energy is offering up $50 instant rebates for users who purchase a smart thermostat--such as the Nest Learning Thermostat or Ecobee Smartsi--through the new program.
