Salt Lake City-based Fusion-io, the heavily backed Flash-based storage startup, said earlier this week that it has rolled out a new operating system subsystem it says is optimized for flash-based storage. The firm said its ioMemory VSL (Virtual Storage Layer) optimizes how operating systems deal with traditional I/O, when using both memory and flash-based disk. The firm claims its file system, DFS, outperforms the standard Linux ext3 file system by 20 percent for direct access and over 149 percent for buffered access. The firm said it is providing the technology to its OEMs, thidr party devleopers, and research groups.
