COPAN Gets Patent

Longmont, Colorado-based COPAN Systems has been awarded a new patent on its MAID disk storage systems, the firm is reporting. COPAN said that Aloke Guha, the company's chief technology officer, and Chris Santilli, the firm's chief architect, have received a patent for the firm's critical components. The patent, 7,035,972, is entitled "Method and apparatus for power-efficient high-capacity scalable storage system". The patent describes the company's method for deploying hard disk drives using a power management system, which is the core of the company's tape replacement products. The patent was granted on April 25th. The patent also names Gary B. McMillian of Austin, Texas as an inventor. COPAN is developing power-managed, high density disk arrays targeted for use as replacement for tape in backup systems.
