Siemens Selects Boulder For Wind Research Center

Siemens Energy Sector, the power generation and distribution arm of European engineering conglomerate Siemens AG, announced Tuesday that it will establish a wind turbine research and development center in Boulder, Colorado. Siemens Energy said it expects the facility will employ some 50 people and will focus its research efforts on atmospheric science, aerodynamic blade design, structural dynamics, wind turbine dispatch prediction and reliability. In a related development, Siemens Energy said it will collaborate with the National Renewable Energy Lab as part of a research and development agreement for the installation of a Siemens-built 2.3 megawatt pilot wind turbine at the National Wind Technology Center near Boulder. Siemens Energy said it will test basic wind turbine characteristics and verify new performance-enhancing features under extreme weather conditions for a minimum of three years. Siemens Energy currently operates wind turbine R&D centers in Denmark, The Netherlands, Germany and the United Kingdom.
