Broomfield, Colorado-based fiber optics-based communications services provider Level 3 Communications said today that it has been picked to upgrade a prominent public university system's wide-area network. The financial impact of the customer win was not disclosed. According to Level 3, it will boost the capacity of the University of Wisconsin's research and education network tenfold. Level 3 said the network, called WiscNet, will deliver data at the rate of 10 gigabits per second once the upgrade is complete. Level 3 quoted a Wisconsin official as saying cost and reliability factored in the selection process.
